Wild horses range all up and down the Atlantic Coast of North America, particularly in the Mid-Atlantic and Southern states. They are not BLM and not USFS. Their legal and protection status varies with each area.

Here are links to some of the better-known areas:

I am fortunate to own one of the wild "ponies" on Assateague Island, Va. As you probably know, they round up the ponies and sell the foals each year. They keep a few back to live on the island and to restock the herd.

These are called Buy-Backs, basically you pay a insane amount of money for a horse you can never touch or take home, but you get to name it and register it and have bragging rights.

I purchased this Buy-Back mare in July 2002 along with 7 friends of mine. We paid $7,800.00 for her. Her name is: "Surfer Dude's Gidget" ("Surfer Dude" is her father).

She is a beautiful "chocolate" chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail, a long wide blaze and 4 white socks, she is beautiful. I will attach a few pictures of her. My big dream is to purchase and take home her first foal.
